Google, Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, and Wikipedia are all protesting the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA). Wikipedia and Reddit blocked all or a portion of their sites as part of the protest, and the Google logo can’t even be seen due to a black censor bar. They’re up against some heavy competition from the media industry, but having an international influence over millions of users has given them the edge in terms of making a point. And just what are they so riled up about?
SOPA and PIPA are two bills being considered in the U.S. that will affect how online outlets control information. Namely, if someone accuses a site of hosting copyrighted material, that site can be banned, their ISP may refuse to host them, financial institutions will not be allowed to process transactions for them online, their ads will be pulled, and users will effectively not even know the site exists anymore. Unless of course, the site has the resources to confront the accusation in court- which many smaller businesses do not. Many businesses will likely close and this means those sites will close for everyone, not just Americans.
So how will this affect online gambling? Well SOPA and PIPA are both aimed at foreign entities that post, host, or sell copyrighted media and/or stand to make a profit from U.S. citizens in a (deemed) illegal fashion. Gambling operations are, of course, foreign entities that stand to profit from U.S. citizens. While online casinos do not necessarily deal with media that belongs to anyone else, they are affected by their ranking on google and the ability for people to find their casino and deposit there. And if accused of infringing upon a copyright somehow, the site will surely lose revenue and maybe even its ability to make payouts to players, even those living outside of the US. SOPA and PIPA make it possible for one dissenting voice to bar thousands of users from accessing a site (even if only temporarily).
Consider the wide-ranging implications. If a user in the forum of an online poker site posts a link to a copyrighted movie, for example, the Hollywood studio could demand that the casino be removed from google listings, that banks not transfer funds to or from that casino, that ads for the casino be banned from other sites, and that the ISP prohibit users from accessing the site. Even if it’s cleared up in a relatively short period of time, you’re still talking about a huge financial loss for the casino. And it isn’t even just US players that will lose access to the site temporarily- it will be everyone.
Whether you’re a US resident or not, these are serious bills that could hurt the online casino industry and would likely not do a single thing to stop rogue casinos from taking advantage of players. You have the opportunity to make your voice heardl; sign a petition or call your senator or representative and say ‘no’ to SOPA and PIPA.
